Buenos Aires health program launched a prevention campaign

Breastfeeding could save each year, the lives of some 1.3 million children a year, said the World Health Organization.

The activity worldwide, aims this year to reinforce the importance of breastfeeding to save lives in situations marked by natural disasters, wars or pandemics, such as influenza A H1N1.

Raineri said further that, according to data from previous pandemics and pregnant women who suffered flu, “influenza can be severe in pregnancy.”

Influenza does not cause deformation

The official said that “there is a higher rate of spontaneous abortions and premature births” although “there is no evidence that influenza causes fetal malformations.”

The campaign includes distribution of information pamphlets and brochures with prevention guidelines that are given to pregnant women and maternity health teams and health centers and hospitals in the province.

Breast milk is a fluid changing as it adapts to the requirements of infant over time, depending on energy needs and development of the newborn. Thus, the composition undergoes changes throughout lactation and also during the day.
